Who are we?  And what does Nochi mean anyway?

In the spring of 2004, inspired by the upcoming birth of her first grandchild, stay-at-home mother of six and part-time craft TV-show host Debbie Stapley wanted to give something special to her eldest daughter Amanda as they awaited the arrival of Amanda’s new baby girl.

Knowing that Amanda and the new baby would soon be moving to upstate New York, where temperatures dip well below freezing, Debbie set out to find something to keep the new baby warm during the long winter, and especially during the long winter nights.  Debbie looked everywhere, but no store or boutique had quite what she was looking for.  So, with an idea, some fabric, and some inspiration, Debbie created the first of what would come to be known as the Original Nochi Sleeper.

The Nochi, as it is called for short, was the envy of every mother around.  Amanda and new baby Madelyn instantly fell in love with “Grammy’s” special gift.  Not only did the Nochi keep Madelyn warm, but it was comfortable and practical, too.  In fact, the more Amanda used the Nochi, the more uses she found for it.  (See “More Details” link.)  She quickly found that it solved many of the bedtime concerns mothers often have for their babies.

With the knowledge of the many functions of the Nochi, Amanda approached Debbie with a desire to share this wonderful gift with others of her friends and family who were expecting.  Debbie was excited, too, but before long, Amanda had to begin sewing as well just to keep up with the demand.  Not long after that, the Nochi was the most requested baby shower gift among all their friends and family!

Today, tired of sewing, but still with heavy demand for Nochis, Debbie and Amanda have allowed this wonderful product to go beyond just friends and family, and want to share their product with you and your baby.  Mothers across the country love their Nochi, and you will too!

So, what does Nochi mean anyway? It is a Russian word meaning "of the night" or "nights."  Debbie’s Russian-speaking son-in-law suggested the name, which Debbie loved and immediately adopted to her product.  The catchy name stuck, and babies everywhere have been enjoying their Nochis ever since.
